A Wollaston Smith III Historical Overview
Wollaston Smith’s concept is built on the name. The development of this name started when at the age of 19, Wollaston Smith, as a freshman in architecture at Georgia Institute of technology, started his first company. He entered and won his first design competition, which was to redesign his home town’s central business district in North Carolina while beating out many known architects, engineering and contracting firms.

In 1977 to 1980, Wollaston Smith was hired by the Diamond Corporation, a national Real Estate development company whom owned 7 national resorts including Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina. He was head of their architectural control department and in Real Estate Sales where he became Salesman of the Year and designed many homes and small commercial buildings, including the chapel and bell tower at their Lake Arrowhead Resort in Georgia.
In 1980, Wollaston Smith was hired by GEBA, a German cabinet and built-in furniture company. The job was general manger of their wholesale division of North America. This entailed creating business with Developers, Architects, and Builders throughout the U.S. and Canada. Later he was promoted to President, Corporate Director and General Manager of North America. Other than Chief Designer and Sales Director, the job included overseeing the daily operations, the expansion of new company showrooms, marketing, and product development.
In 1986, Wollaston Smith International, Inc. was founded. Specializing in designing and selling custom factory built cabinets, built-in furniture and free standing original cabinet pieces, as well as the design of overall rooms, homes, and offices; the company developed a reputation for providing the best quality products and services in the high-end furnishings and accessory market, especially custom kitchens. They worked in collaboration with clients, architects, builders, and interior designers, remodelers, and Real Estate agents.
A Wollaston Smith III has won many design awards, including: National Home Builders Association for Best Kitchen Design for three years in a row, Best Home Design for the National Home Builders, first place Kitchen Design for DuPont Corian, and Better Homes and Gardens Corporation commissioned him to design the Ultimate Kitchen for their readers. One of his kitchens was nominated for an Emmy for Best Set Design for a cooking show. At that time, this was the only Emmy nomination awarded to a cooking show. He has done work for the Royal Family of England; CEO and CFO’s of top corporations in the U.S. and Europe; sports; entertainment; and political figures.
His work has been featured in many TV shows, like HGTV and PBS. Also he and his designs have been featured in many national and regional magazines and newspapers such as: Better Homes and Gardens, Better Homes and Gardens Remodeling Magazine, Better Homes and Kitchens Planning Guide, Gourmet Magazine, Country Living, Kitchen and Bath Designs News, Kitchen and Bath Business Magazine, House Beautiful, Southern Homes, Jezebel, Atlanta Magazine, Peachtree Magazine, Georgia Magazine, The Season, Class Acts, Atlanta Journal and Constitution, and Raleigh Extra.
